Background of the Study
Cultural narratives serve as a repository of collective memory and identity, playing a crucial role in shaping discourse practices. In Calabar, Efik storytelling is deeply embedded in the local cultural fabric, with narratives that encompass myths, traditions, and historical accounts (Inyang, 2023). These narratives are not only artistic expressions but also serve as vehicles for conveying social norms and moral values. The interplay between cultural context and linguistic expression is evident in the structured storytelling practices that define Efik discourse. Modern influences and the encroachment of global media, however, have begun to alter traditional storytelling forms. Despite these changes, the resilience of cultural narratives in maintaining discourse practices remains significant. This study explores how cultural narratives in Efik storytelling influence language use, narrative coherence, and audience interpretation in Calabar. The research emphasizes the importance of preserving these narratives as a means of cultural continuity and as a source of insights into indigenous knowledge systems (Inyang, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although Efik storytelling is renowned for its rich cultural narratives, there is a lack of systematic investigation into how these narratives shape discourse practices. The ongoing tension between traditional cultural expressions and modern communication forms raises concerns about the potential dilution of indigenous discourse strategies (Ekpo, 2024). This research gap complicates efforts to fully understand the mechanisms by which cultural narratives influence narrative structure and audience engagement. Furthermore, without a detailed analysis of these practices, strategies for preserving and revitalizing Efik storytelling may remain underdeveloped. The study, therefore, aims to critically examine the effect of cultural narratives on discourse practices in Efik storytelling in Calabar.
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the cultural narratives embedded in Efik storytelling.
To evaluate how these narratives influence discourse practices.
To propose methods for preserving traditional narrative forms.
Research Questions
What cultural narratives are central to Efik storytelling in Calabar?
How do these narratives shape discourse practices?
What strategies can be employed to preserve these indigenous narrative forms?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the influence of cultural narratives on discourse practices in Efik storytelling, offering insights into the preservation of indigenous knowledge and cultural identity. The findings will inform cultural practitioners, educators, and policymakers on how to sustain traditional narrative forms in the face of modern pressures. The research ultimately aims to contribute to the broader discourse on cultural preservation and effective communication strategies (Inyang, 2023; Ekpo, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the examination of cultural narratives and their impact on discourse practices in Efik storytelling within Calabar and does not extend to other cultural groups or regions.
